Simple recipe for cream cheese filling for Texas Kolaches. Regular and lemon variation.
Some prefer to use quick and easy alternatives, such as Rhodes rolls, rather than making kolache dough from scratch. I wanted to share this cream cheese filling recipe for people who were looking for it, rather than the whole in-depth kolache recipe.

This recipe makes enough to fill one dozen kolaches with 1 Tbsp. of filling each.
Ingredients
- Cream Cheese – Softened. I have made it with regular and light cream cheese.
- Egg Yolk
- Granulated Sugar
- Vanilla Extract
To make Lemon Cream Cheese Filling
- Add ½ tsp. lemon zest and ½ tsp. lemon juice; omit vanilla extract.
How to make cream cheese filling for kolaches
Combine softened cream cheese, egg yolk, sugar and vanilla extract in stand-mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes or until mixture is fluffy.

- 1 – 8 oz. block cream cheese softened
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ c. granulated sugar
- ½ tsp. vanilla extract
